Edin Dzeko could not hide his delight after helping Manchester City romp to victory over Newcastle United in Manuel Pellegini’s first league game in charge.

David Silva gave City the lead in the sixth minute at Etihad Stadium after a bright start by the hosts as the Spaniard converted Dzeko’s cross.

Sergio Aguero then made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute before Steven Taylor was shown a straight red card for a foul on the Argentina international.

Yaya Toure’s free-kick put Pellegrini’s men three to the good, before Samir Nasri added a fourth in the 75th minute to move City to the top of the Premier League table after the opening round of fixtures.

“We scored four goals, didn’t concede any, so of course [it was a perfect start],” Dzeko told Sky Sports. “I think we played a fantastic match, not only 45 minutes, but 90, which is what the manager expects from us.

“We could have scored maybe a few more but we are happy with these four. I wanted to score so badly but in the end we won the game, we have three points. The next games are coming and I’m ready.”

Dzeko also reserved special praise for Pellegrini and the way he has managed his new squad since succeeding Roberto Mancini.

He added: “The new manager brings something different to us, especially to me. He’s given me confidence and that’s what I needed.”

Meanwhile, Toure hailed City’s summer signings as Fernandinho, Álvaro Negredo and Jesús Navas all made their Premier League debuts.

“Amazing, quality players,” said Toure. “These kinds of players will help the team to grow and the target of the club this year is to do fantastic things in the Premier League and Champions League.”
