Man City’s Manuel Pellegrini: Edin Dzeko must improve

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini insists Edin Dzeko must improve if the striker wants a long-term future at Eastlands

Manuel Pellegrini says Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko must rediscover his old form if the striker wants to have a future at the Citizens.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina forward put in a man-of-the-match performance in a 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on Monday night despite failing to get on the score sheet himself.

Dzeko struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in Roberto Mancini’s side last season despite managing to net 14 goals in 32 top-flight appearances, largely as a substitute.

The 27-year-old scored 48 goals in two seasons at Wolfsburg prior to his Citizens move, and Mancini’s successor Pellegrini wants Dzeko to improve his goal tally over the course of the season.

“I told him that if he wants to stay here we must see the player Manchester City bought two years ago,” Pellegrini is quoted in the Sunday People.

“Dzeko played well against Newcastle – not very, very well because he must score. He worked for the team and had bad luck, and there were some good saves.

“I am confident he will score goals, of course, because he’s scored goals in his whole career. We have other good strikers so we should be in very good shape.

“I don’t expect a certain amount of goals from him, or any of them. It’s important the team wins, who scores the goals is not important.”
