Manchester United

David De Gea Rarely troubled by Wigan. Saw an Espinoza shot flash wide. Claimed well under the high ball. 6/10

Rafael Picked up a knock early on in the first half. Replaced by Chris Smalling. 5/10

Nemanja Vidic (captain) A commanding and powerful display from the United skipper. Marshalled the back four well. 6/10

Phil Jones Strong in the challenge and combative as ever. Moved to right-back after Rafael’s injury. Will look to hold down a starting role at centre-half. 6/10

Patrice Evra Marauded forward time-and-time again. Had little to defend against which allowed him to provide the assist for Van Persie’s opening goal. 7/10

Ryan Giggs Calm and reassuring presence for United in the midfield. Passed well and opened up the play to the wings. 6/10

Michael Carrick (Man of the match) Picked up where he left of last season. Displayed his full range of passing and put in some exquisite passes. Needs to stay fit if United are to retain their status as Premier League champions. 8/10

Tom Cleverley Complemented Carrick well in the midfield. United may need someone with more physicality in the centre of the park if they are to contend with Chelsea and Man City. 5/10

Wilfried Zaha Debut day for the ex-Crystal Palace winger. Started explosively and showed some flashy touches. Over eager at times and took too much out of the ball. 5/10

Danny Welbeck Played the No10 role and looked to be the link between midfield and attack. Probably not his favoured position but held up the ball well and provided the assist for Van Persie’s second goal. 6/10

Robin van Persie Grabbed a brace in his first-ever appearance for United in the Community Shield. Linked well with Evra for his opening goal. Scored his first with an intelligent arcing header. 7/10

Substitutes

Chris Smalling Replaced Rafael early on. Struggled to get to grips with the game but eventually found his rhythm at centre back. 5/10

Antonio Valencia Need’s to get back to the player he was. Looked afraid to take on his man. 5/10

Adnan Januzaj N/A

Shinji Kagawa N/A

Wigan Athletic

Scott Carson Had to pick the ball out of his net twice. Was on constant alert as his defenders struggled to stem the flow of United attacks and couldn’t do much for either goal. 5/10

Emmerson Boyce (Captain) Had a tough time trying to keep Evra quiet. Allowed the French defender to whip the ball in for United’s opener. 4/10

Leon Barnett The newly signed 27-year-old struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Looked out of his depth at centre- half. 4/10

James Perch The ex-Newcastle man put in a solid shift. Looked confident and assured whilst under pressure. The ball deflected of English man to put United two up. 5/10

Stephen Crainey Linked well with McClean on the left flank. Always willing to get forward and was full of energy. 6/10

Ben Watson Made two stray passes in the early stages of the game. Out-played in the middle of the park. 4/10

James McArthur Picked up a yellow card in the 49th minute for a poorly timed challenge on Danny Welbeck. 4/10

James McCarthy The Republic of Ireland international didn’t see enough of the ball. Spent most of his time defending in the midfield. 5/10

James McClean Started well and put Rafael under pressure in the early stages. Drilled a ball across goal when he should have teed up Grant Holt. 5/10

Shaun Maloney Looked to push Wigan forward. Played in behind Holt but didn’t have a chance to effect the game. 5/10

Grant Holt Looked to batter his way into the United box. Was isolated and proved ineffective. Didn’t cause the United defence much problems. 4/10

Subsitutes

Callum McManaman Lively and full energy. Replaced McClean in the 59th minute. 5/10
