Robin van Persie scored both goals against Wigan to help David Moyes’ Manchester United win the Community Shield – and then insisted the Red Devils are ready to defend their title even if no new players arrive at Old Trafford this summer.

United are yet to bring in any big-name signings despite being linked with the likes of Cesc Fàbregas and Marouane Fellaini.

But Van Persie is confident that his side are strong enough to defend their Premier League crown with the squad as it stands.

“We got [Wilfried] Zaha, who is doing really well,” Van Persie told ITV1. “I just said earlier, I believe in this team.

“I don’t want to be funny but we are the champions, so based on what are we third favourites [to win the title]? Can you explain that? I don’t really care.

“I believe in this team and I believe that we will compete until the end again.”

Last season’s top scorer in the English top flight netted the opener in the sixth minute when he expertly headed Patrice Evra’s cross into the bottom left corner at Wembley.

And the Dutchman extended his side’s lead on the hour-mark when his low shot was deflected in off James Perch.

“It’s always nice to score, especially at Wembley,” he continued. “It’s a great day for the fans, for us, and for the manager. One day, one game and you can win one trophy, which is what we did. I’m really glad for everyone.”

He added: “Last year I scored a couple of headers, not too many, so I have to improve on that. But I think it went in quite nicely.”
