David Moyes insists Wayne Rooney is looking in great shape ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday.

The 27-year-old forward made his first start of the season for the reigning Premier League champions in a goalless draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The England international has been the subject of interest from the Blues throughout the summer but Rooney struck a focused and motivated figure against Jose Mourinho’s side.

And Moyes is delighted with Rooney’s attitude ahead of the north-west derby.

“Wayne Rooney has been a great player for many years for Manchester United,” Moyes told a news conference on Friday.

“He was an up and coming great player as a young boy at Everton and his career has gone the way that people expected it to go.

“I felt he played very well the other night and he’s looking in good condition and is mentally in good shape too. We’ll do everything we possibly can to keep that going and need him to keep performing well. At the moment, he’s in good shape.”

On the possibility of Rooney leaving the club, Moyes added: “We told you and everybody else from day one, so I don’t think there’s anything else to add today.”
