Roy Keane believes Manchester United shouldn’t beg Wayne Rooney to stay and sell the forward if he wants to leave Old Trafford.

The England international was omitted from David Moyes’ squad for the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic at Wembley on Sunday.

It prompted speculation Rooney could be set to leave the Premier League champions after Chelsea failed with two bids for the 27-year-old.

And former United captain Keane reckons the Red Devils should sell Rooney for £30-40m and reinvest in new signings this summer.

“We’ve not heard too much from Wayne, we’ve just been speculating that he wants to leave,” Keane told ITV.

“For me, it’s very straight forward. If a player wants to leave Manchester United and they get the right offer, from whatever club that might be from, I would say sell him.

“You can’t be begging players to stay at your football club.”

He added: “There’s been a lot of criticism of Wayne over the past few weeks but I think you have to remember that he’s been a top, top player for Manchester United.

“Whatever has gone on and he’s seems disappointed with his treatment, he’s given eight or nine years of great service.

“If a player wants to leave and it’s £30-40m offer from whatever club, including Chelsea, they should sell him and rebuild.

“United have lost great players over the years and they’ve always recovered and continued to win trophies.”
