Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United can retain their Premier League title without any new signings this summer.

New Red Devils manager David Moyes won his first piece of silverware since taking charge of the club on Sunday as Robin van Persie’s brace secured a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield.

The 50-year-old Scot, who was confirmed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor in May, has been thwarted in his attempts to sign Barcelona’s Cesc Fàbregas, while there is talk of United moving for Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, 13-time league champion Giggs is confident the current squad is more than capable of winning the club’s 21st top-flight crown following on from their success in the 2012/13 campaign.

“The quality is in the squad,” Giggs said. “We showed that last year. Now we have to show it again.

“It has been a slow transfer window. Manchester City did their business early on but, other than that, there has not been a lot of movement so it could be a hectic last two weeks.

“We will just have to wait and see how it goes but we are quite happy with the players in our dressing room. We won the league with those players. If we sign someone – great. If not we will just get on with it.”
