Steven Gerrard insists it’s the “same old” Wayne Rooney in the England camp – but has refused to comment on speculation surrounding the striker’s future.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from Manchester United this summer after Europa League winners Chelsea launched two bids for the England international.

Red Devils manager David Moyes wants to keep the forward at Old Trafford, but Rooney is yet to make his position clear ahead of his club’s Premier League opener at Swansea.

“He’s the same old Wayne Rooney, he’s been scoring goals, and he’s ready to play. He’s prepared really well, he needs minutes for his personal fitness and I’m sure he itching to start,” Gerrard told a news conference on Tuesday.

“His future is none of my business. It is all about how he is feeling for Wednesday’s game. I’m sure he will sort out the other problems for himself.”

Gerrard hopes England can gain momentum against Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday ahead of next month’s vital World Cup qualifiers.

“It is important we go in with confidence, because this is a big game for us. There’ll be no holding back and we want to win,” Gerrard added.

“We have four big World Cup qualifiers coming up and this is a game against our old rivals so we are looking forward to it.”
