Peter Schmeichel is convinced that Wayne Rooney will not be leaving Manchester United this summer, insisting the uncertainty over his future is “95 per cent” media speculation.

The 27-year-old’s future has been a source of relentless reports this summer after Chelsea made two unsuccessful bids to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Rooney’s situation was thrown into the spotlight towards the end of last season when Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that the striker had asked to leave Old Trafford.

But United legend Schmeichel is certain that the England international will not be departing the Premier League champions this summer.

“I don’t think Wayne is going anywhere,” Schmeichel told talkSPORT. “Manchester United do not sell their best players. We shouldn’t sell any player rated in the best 10 in the world.

“I don’t see any player out there better than him so why would you sell him.

“I think 95 per cent of all of this has been media speculation.

“I think something which is really important here is that Wayne is still at the club which means if Manchester United wanted to get rid of him they would have done that a long, long time ago.

“They know what impact a player of Wayne’s calibre has on the football club and the speculation that follows that.”
