Wayne Rooney admitted he is lacking match “sharpness” after coming off the bench to help Manchester United ease to an opening-day win at Swansea City.

The 27-year-old, whose future remains a source of speculation as he continues to be linked with Chelsea, played the final half-hour at the Liberty Stadium as he set up goals for Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie in a 4-1 win.

Rooney missed the whole of United’s pre-season tour due to hamstring and shoulder injuries – and the England striker is looking forward to getting some more game-time under his belt.

“You obviously need that sharpness,” Rooney said. “I haven’t had that many training sessions with the first team [at United] because they have been away.

“I might be lacking that bit of sharpness but hopefully that will come. I need to try and get a few more games in.

“You always look forward to having a good pre-season. It’s important you do that.

“Unfortunately I got the injury to my hamstring and then to my shoulder. It’s been disappointing but you’ve got to deal with it.”
