Jonny Evans has questioned whether Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea will transform the Blues into Premier League title contenders.

The Europa League holders have been widely tipped to win the top-flight crown after the 50-year-old signed a four-year deal following his return to Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid.

Mourinho sparked controversy when he publicly confirmed that the Blues are planning a third bid for Wayne Rooney, after claiming that the United team that won the league last term were not an “unbelievable” side.

The Blues face defending champions Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night, and Evans reckons it could be a couple of months before it becomes clear which clubs will challenge for the Red Devils’ crown.

“It’s all just mind games, really,” said Evans. “It’s maybe his way of trying to unsettle us.

“We don’t read too much into that kind of thing and, as players, we laugh that kind of thing off.”

He added: “Everyone is saying that now Chelsea have Mourinho back, it will make a big difference to them but we will have to wait and see whether that will be the case.

“I am sure he will have an impact but we might have to wait a month or two before you realise who is going to be challenging for the title.

“Mourinho had that spell at Chelsea when he gave his players a lot of confidence but it remains to be seen whether he can have that impact again.”
