England were denied the chance to seal a record 4-0 Ashes series win after bad light came to Australia’s rescue as the fifth Test ended in a draw at The Oval.

Alastair Cook’s men needed 21 from 24 balls to successfully chase down a target of 227 set by Australia, but the umpires called time on the day’s proceedings to ensure England would have to settle for a 3-0 series win.

Nevertheless, here is a selection of our favourite tweets from the professionals, as well as celebrity cricket fans, to England’s triumph.

England rugby legend Matt Dawson (‏@matt9dawson) wants Australia to stay out there: “Suck it up Aussies. You’re used to playing in the dark. You’ve been doing it all series!! ;)”

Olympian Anthony Ogogo ‏(@AnthonyOgogo) is disappointed to see the umpires call an end to play: “Boooo hissss, sometimes officials just DO NOT get it. #Ashes”

Former Ashes winning captain Michael Vaughan (‏@MichaelVaughan) doesn’t approve either: “What a F###ing joke … #Ashes. I hope the ICC are realising they are ruining the game!!!!!!”

Taking a break from lynching a certain Arsenal manager, Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan): “Utter disgrace. What a terrible way to end a fantastic test match. #Ashes”

Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) isn’t happy with the sport: “Unbelievable. Cricket’s ashes to be scattered on the Oval’s outfield.”

Former England batsman Paul Collingwood ‏(@Colly622) is happy for his old team-mates: “3-0 enough said #Ashes #RISE”

England’s Luke Wright (‏@lukewright20) is pleased for his colleagues: “Congrats to all the England players & staff. Amazing effort to win 3-0. What a night out they are going to have! #ashes”

Ex-batsman Mark Butcher ‏(@markbutcher72) gives a different view to the general opinion: “Got to feel for the two umpires, they were merely implementing the laws. They must be feeling pretty low at the moment.”

Happy-go-lucky ex-England star Phil Tufnell ‏(@philtufnell) won’t have his spirits dampened: “Wahey! Tweet me your Ashes celebration pics! #tuffersashes”

England star Kevin Pietersen (‏@KP24) is savouring his fourth Ashes success: “That’s right.. That’s Ashes #4 … #BOOOOOM”

The hero of the fourth Test Stuart Broad ‏(@StuartBroad8): “Seconds before it was lifted!!! Thanks for the support. Love winning!! #3-0”

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) praises the winning side: “Well done England on the Ashes. To not lose a test without being at their best throughout shows what a strong group they are.”

England football legend Michael Owen (‏@themichaelowen) gives his thoughts on the premature end: “Sad end to #TheAshes but can’t blame the Umpires. The rules need to change. If we’re honest, we didn’t deserve to win the last test anyway.”

More from Vaughan ‏(@MichaelVaughan): “Well done England .. Enjoy the celebrations… #Ashes. #3-0. And @KP24 showed today why I think he is England’s greatest Batsman.. #Ashes. #BoxOffice”

Australia legend Shane Warne (‏@warne888) shows good sportsmanship: “Congrats England on your win, You were the better team, enjoy the celebrations. To @MClarke23 hold your head high, proud of you & the team #ashes”

Finally, Nick Compton ‏(@thecompdog): “Good to see my dad propping up the podium at the oval handing out the Compton miller medal #gilesclarkelookalike #ashes”
