Man of the match Robin van Persie revealed his delight at helping Manchester United secure a “big win” as they kicked off their Premier League title defence with a commanding victory at Swansea City.

Van Persie gave United the lead at the Liberty Stadium in the 34th minute with a stunning volley, before Danny Welbeck doubled their advantage when he tapped home from close range.

The Dutchman then made it 3-0 with a superb individual effort, before Wilfried Bony pulled a goal back for the hosts.

Welbeck then chipped in a fourth as manager David Moyes made a winning start to his first league campaign as United boss.

“We are very happy because to play against Swansea in the first game of the league, away from home, is tough,” Van Persie told Sky Sports.

“You can see that they have a great team, I actually love the way they play but it’s very hard to play against at times. So [it’s] a big win.

“They were better in the first 15, 20 minutes, but the goal changed the game and we got a second shortly after so I think it helped us.”

He added: “The fourth goal from Danny Welbeck was unbelievable.”
