Michael Laudrup heaped praise on Swansea City for a “magnificent” result after the Swans put five past Petrolul Ploiesti in the first leg of their Europa League play-off at Liberty Stadium.

Wayne Routledge broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when the midfielder’s strike was deflected into the net by Ovidiu Hoban, with Michu adding a second moments later, before the former Crystal Palace winger netted his second of the night.

The Capital One Cup winners were too strong for their Romanian opponents, and Wilfried Bony was denied his second Swansea goal when the visitors’ goalkeeper deflected the Ivorian’s effort into the net, with the shot stopper accredited with an own goal.

And Swansea substitute Alejandro Pozuelo completed the rout with a delicate chipped effort before Petrolul Ploiesti’s Gheorge Grozav scored a late overhead kick to give the visitors remote hope of a comeback in the second leg next week.

“Yes it was a great result,” Laudrup told ITV Sport.

“In the first half, particularly the first 20 minutes, we played very well scoring three goals, moving the ball around.

“They didn’t have a shot on target.

“We dropped off for the last 15 minutes of the first half. But in the second half, we started well again and scored a couple of goals, in the end they scored one great goal.

“I’d like to have had a clean sheet, but if they had to score, that one was ok. It’s a magnificent result and I think we can go into the second leg with a lot of confidence.”

He added: “It is [a boast after the Manchester United loss]. Scoring five goals. We want to go into the group stage. We did well today. We still have to finish well.”
