Andre Villas-Boas admitted his relief after watching his Tottenham side emerge victorious from a closely-contested encounter with Swansea City at White Hart Lane.

Summer signing Roberto Soldado netted the winner for the second week running in the 58th minute when he stroked home his penalty after Jonjo Shelvey was adjudged to have brought down Andros Townsend in the box.

And Villas-Boas was delighted to see his side extend their 100 per cent start to the new season against a battling Swansea outfit.

“It was difficult. I think defensively we did very well,” Villas-Boas told Sky Sports. “You often see Swansea taking control of possession but today they didn’t, so I think we were defensively sound.

“It was a tight encounter, but I think in the end it was a deserved result.”

He continued: “It’s a good start. Last season we had a different start to the season [when Spurs took two points from their first three games].

“It gives us a little bit of confidence heading into a difficult game against Arsenal next week [on Sunday]. I’m very pleased.”

Villas-Boas also spoke about Gareth Bale’s situation amid reports that the Wales international, who sat out Sunday’s win, is on the verge of a world-record move to Real Madrid.

“We’ve gone on with our business,” he said. “Gareth, unfortunately for us, hasn’t been part of our squad, but we have a big squad to choose from.

“This team can only develop and we look forward towards the future.

“With Gareth or without, we can be stronger.”
