Tottenham transfers: ‘Erik Lamela will improve at Spurs’
Tottenham transfers: Former Spurs midfielder Ricky Villa says Erik Lamela will improve drastically at White Hart Lane
Former Ricky Villa says Roma midfielder Erik Lamela will improve “drastically” at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Argentina international is on the brink of a €30m (£26m) move to Tottenham as Andre Villas-Boas looks to sign his fifth player of the summer transfer window.
The north London side had been heavily linked with a move for the 21-year-old as Spurs talisman Gareth Bale edged towards a world-record £86m move to Real Madrid.
Lamela, who has been capped three times by Argentina, scored 15 goals in 33 Serie A appearances for Roma last term in his second season Italy’s top flight.
And former Tottenham midfielder Villa tipped Lamela to shine at Spurs.
“Lamela will improve dramatically as a player at Tottenham,” he told Goal. “I think the arrival of Erik Lamela to Tottenham is fantastic. The manager is building up a super-competitive team.
“European football in general is lacking in footballers that are capable of creating, of inventing. English football is very dynamic, very quick, but it’s lacking in the volumen de juego [inventiveness, creativity] that players like Lamela can bring to the table.”
On Tuesday, Roma confirmed the deal: “AS Roma gives notice that it has agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur for the outright sale of Erik Lamela for a fee of €30m.
“The agreement contains the recognition of a corresponding variable fee, up to a maximum of €5m, for bonuses linked to the player’s achievements of certain sporting objectives.”
Lamela scored 19 goals in 62 Serie A appearances after moving to the Italian capital from River Plate in 2011.
