Daniel Levy has not given up on keeping Gareth Bale at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the summer, according to former Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle.

The 24-year-old’s future has been a source of relentless speculation this summer as the Wales international continues to be linked with a big-money transfer to Real Madrid.

Bale did not show up for Tottenham training on Tuesday morning despite Spurs expecting the PFA player of the year back at their Enfield base.

But Hoddle is adamant that Spurs chairman Levy is still hoping he can keep hold of the player past next week’s transfer deadline.

“I was at the Swansea game at the weekend and had a good chat with Daniel Levy,” Hoddle told talkSPORT.

“He’s ambitious and believes, if Bale was to stay, that Tottenham could go on and do something really strong in the Premier League.”

“It’s difficult for Daniel Levy to stop a player joining Real Madrid,” he added. “When they come knocking, and the lad wants to go, it’s difficult to say no.

“I get the feeling there’s more business to be done though. Levy wants to strengthen the squad.”
