Harry Redknapp admits Queens Park Rangers are unlikely to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe this summer.

The west London side, who were relegated from the Premier League in May, are keen to add the England international to their ranks after allowing Loic Remy to join Newcastle United on a season-long loan deal.

The 30-year-old forward previously worked with Redknapp during spells at Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Tottenham and West Ham United.

Despite Spurs’ initial refusal to sell Defoe, the Hoops manager believes there is a still a “small chance” of landing the former Hammers striker.

“I’d love to have Jermain. We made an enquiry but at the moment he’s not available. We’re nowhere near anything. There is a small chance of it happening,” said Redknapp.

Last month, Defoe said he expected to remain at Tottenham beyond the summer.

“People say ‘This club’s in for you, that club’s in for you’ but I don’t take any notice,” Defoe told the Sun.

“If someone comes in for you, your agent will tell you. It goes over my head. It’s happened
for years. All I can say is I was doing the kit thing so it looks like I’ll be wearing it for the season.

“In a World Cup year it’s important for me to play. It’s based on merit. People will look at me and ask how many goals have I scored? To score goals you’ve got to play.

“I’ve got to score a lot of goals this season to get into the squad. A top club brings in top players. When you’ve something to fight for, you get the best out of yourself.”
