Michael Carrick described Wayne Rooney as “one of us” after striker came off the bench to help Manchester United seal an opening-day win at Swansea City.

The 27-year-old’s future has been a source of constant speculation this summer as Chelsea continue to be linked with a move for the England international.

After missing the whole of United’s pre-season tour due to injury, Rooney played the final 30 minutes at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday and set up goals for Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie in the 4-1 win.

And Carrick was pleased to see the forward back in action, despite the uncertainty over his Old Trafford future.

“I thought he came on and looked good,” Carrick is quoted as saying by the Guardian. “He set up two goals and that’s what he’s all about. He’s a real threat.

“He got a bit of a whack when he made Danny’s second but I’m sure he’ll be all right. He’s a big Manchester United player. He’s one of us and we all stick together.

“When we’re on the pitch we fight for each other and do what we can for Wayne. He’s certainly part of that.

“He’s given this club an awful lot so the fans support him and we support him. As I said, we stick together. It was a good day.”
