Steve Clarke says there was no “big bust-up” with West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka after the striker claimed he was retiring.

The former France international had been accused of walking out on training on Thursday following the death of the forward’s agent Eric Manasse.

However, Clarke revealed the 34-year-old was withdrawn from West Brom’s squad to face Everton on “compassionate ground”, with the forward on indefinite leave.

“There was no big bust-up, he didn’t storm out,” Clarke told a news conference. “Retirement? When you’re not in a good place those thoughts can come into your mind.

“I’m not going to deny he mentioned [retirement]. He hasn’t trained this week [because of a knock]. I was preparing team for Everton without him.”

He added: “I went in and had a very brief chat with him, and he wasn’t in a good place.

“So the club have decided just to give him a bit of time to go away and think about it and get himself in a better place for the future.”

Anelka signed a one-year deal with the Baggies after previously playing for Arsenal, Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League.
