Sam Allardyce felt Joe Cole could have scored a hat-trick after dominant West Ham United sealed a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City at Upton Park.

The former Liverpool midfielder broke the deadlock inside 13 minutes after collecting Matt Jarvis’ low cross and swivelling to fire past David Marshall.

The Hammers had further chances as Cole, Mo Diame and Jarvis were all guilty of missing opportunities before Kevin Nolan sealed three points with 14 minutes remaining.

“I’m delighted with the players. We probably had our best pre-season this year since I’ve been here, with the players settled and no serious injuries,” Allardyce told BBC Sport.

“The lads started to focus technically and tactically on the basics and the whole of that came together today.

“You don’t expect to dominate a game from start to finish but we dominated the first half and Joe Cole should have had a hat-trick.”

He added: “Cardiff had a good spell after half-time but we showed our resilient side.

“If you look at the stats, as I have just done, they have had one shot on target (Matthew Connolly’s header, which was going over when Jussi
Jaaskelainen helped it over his bar) so defensively we were sound and on the front line we were great in possession and created chances.”

Meanwhile, Cole was thrilled to help the east London side make a winning start to their Premier League campaign.

“I think it is very important that we got off to a winning start. Before the first game you feel nerves, apprehension and tension but we have got a win and we can kick on from here,” added Cole.

“We want to improve on last year and do better than last year. Our away form needs to be better this season, and we will look to start improving that at Newcastle next week.”
