Stewart Downing’s £5.5m switch to West Ham United means further competition for places at Upton Park, but Matt Jarvis is thrilled to see another England international join the Hammers.

The 27-year-old, who like Downing is Middlesbrough born, could be the player most affected by the Liverpool winger’s arrival at Boleyn Park as both vie for the right-midfield berth.

Hammers manager Sam Allardyce will have to shift one of his two left-footed wingers on to the right of his midfield as he looks to provide Andy Carroll with ample service.

Jarvis, who moved to West Ham in a club-record £10.75m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, welcomed Downing’s arrival as Allardyce continues to build a quality squad.

“Definitely [Downing’s signing is a good thing],” said Jarvis.

“If you can bring players in that will improve the squad then it’s fantastic news for the club – and having England players here is even better.”

Jarvis scored two goals in 29 Premier League appearances in a solid debut season at the east London side following his big move to Upton Park.

But the midfielder, who earned his only England cap in a 1-1 draw with Ghana in March 2011, revealed he hasn’t spoken to Downing about his favoured position ahead of the new season.

“I haven’t talked about like that just yet. We’ll see what happens.”

Jarvis also backed Downing to slot effortlessly into the West Ham squad, with the 29-year-old linking up with former Reds team-mates Andy Carroll and Joe Cole.

He added: “He’s settled in very well. It helps that he knows quite a few of the players so he’ll settle in very quick.”
