Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger: Olivier Giroud becoming a key player
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Olivier Giroud is becoming an important player for the Gunners
Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on Arsenal’s in-form striker Olivier Giroud – and has backed the France international to become a key player for the Gunners.
The 26-year-old forward continued his excellent goal-scoring form in a 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday, netting his fourth goal in as many top-flight games this season.
Giroud, who joined the north London side in a £9.6m deal from Montpellier last summer, netted 17 goals in all competitions in his first season in the Premier League.
And Gunners boss Wenger was delighted to see the French striker combine with new signing Mesut Ozil and give the visitors the lead at Sunderland, before Aaron Ramsey scored a second-half brace to seal maximum points.
“I’m extremely happy with Giroud,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.
“Not only because he scored, but his overall link play is improving from game to game. I think he is becoming a very important player for us.”
Wenger also expressed his concerns over Giroud’s fitness after the Arsenal forward was substituted with a knee injury on the stroke of full-time at the Stadium of Light.
“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment.” Wenger added.
“[It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace].”
