Arsene Wenger has expressed his delight at securing the signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano from Serie B side Palermo on a season-long loan.
The 27-year-old spent last term on loan to Fiorentina, where he kept 11 clean sheets in 32 league appearances.
Arsenal have the option to buy the shot-stopper on a permanent deal at the end of the season – and Wenger believes that the Italy international will provide his side with “excellent” cover for Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski.
“Viviano is a player that we have rated for some time and we are very pleased to have signed him on loan,” said Wenger.
“He’s experienced and has proved himself at a high level, and provides us with excellent cover to our existing goalkeepers.”
Viviano began his career at Brescia, and has also had spells in Serie A with Inter Milan and Bologna.
