Arsenal transfers: Julian Draxler happy to remain at Schalke
Arsenal transfers: Schlake 04 midfielder Julian Draxler insists he is happy to remain at the Bundesliga outfit
Julian Draxler insists he is happy to stay at Schalke 04 in a World Cup year after being linked with a move to the Premier League.
The 19-year-old playmaker has been touted as a possible target for the Gunners as Arsene Wenger looked to bolster his squad in the summer transfer windonw.
Schalke were reported to value Draxler, who has six Germany caps to his name, at around £40m and the Arsenal boss made a swoop for his compatriot Mesut Ozil instead.
And Draxler revealed he felt it was the right decision to stay at Schalke in order to protect his chances of being included in Joachim Löw’s World Cup squad.
“The World Cup’s at the end of the season and you always need time to get used to a new team,” Draxler told Fifa’s website.
“It was not an easy decision. You never know whether you will ever get such an offer again.
“In the end, I followed my heart and decided to remain at Schalke. On top of that, I’m convinced I’m at the right club with Schalke.
“We haven’t had a great start to the campaign and I was a bit disappointed after the first few games, but I think we took another important step forward after signing Kevin-Prince Boateng. We’ve got a strong team.”
