Arsenal transfers: OFFICIAL! Mesut Ozil joins Gunners on five-year deal
Arsenal transfers: The Gunners confirm the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on a five-year contract for a club-record fee
Arsenal have completed the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on a five-year contract in a club-record deal worth around £42m.
The north Londoners have shattered their transfer record by a staggering £27.4m to land the 24-year-old Germany international, who underwent a medical in Munich on Monday.
The deal was finally confirmed by Arsenal just 30 minutes before Monday’s transfer deadline and Arsene Wenger could not hide his delight after the signing was announced.
“We are extremely pleased to have signed Mesut Ozil,” said Wenger. “He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level. We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.
“I have said throughout the summer that we have been working hard to bring in top quality players to this football club.
“This has involved many many people across the club and I have always had the full support of the club in making decisions on the football side.
“Mesut is a top quality footballer who will be a fantastic addition to our talented squad. We are all looking forward to him joining up with us after his international matches with Germany and working with us as an Arsenal player.”
Ozil, who is currently on international duty with Germany, is reported to have agreed a deal with the Gunners worth in the region of £130,000 a week until 2018, easily making the playmaker Arsenal’s highest earner.
The Germany international is thought to have put the wheels in motion for move away from Real Madrid after it became clear that his first-team place was set to be threatened by the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale.
Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United were also touted as possible destinations for the attacking midfielder but Arsenal stepped up their interest as Monday’s 2300BST transfer deadline approached.
Ozil made 155 appearances for Los Blancos after joining Real Madrid from Werder Bremen three years ago for a fee of around £12.4m.
He joins fellow Germany internationals Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski at Emirates Stadium.
The confirmation of Ozil’s arrival comes after the Gunners announced the arrival of Italy international goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a season-long loan deal from Serie B side Palermo.
