Arsenal are on the verge of clinching the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a deal that would shatter the north London club’s transfer record.

The Gunners are understood to be close to agreeing a £42.5m (€50m) fee with Madrid to bring the 24-year-old to Emirates Stadium before Monday’s 2300BST transfer deadline.

The playmaker has undergone a medical in Munich, where he is on international duty ahead of his country’s World Cup qualifiers.

Ozil, who has agreed personal terms with the north Londoners, has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu in recent weeks, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain both touted as possible destinations along with the Gunners.

The Germany international has made 155 appearances for Los Blancos after joining Real Madrid from Werder Bremen three years ago for a fee of around £12.4m.

Ozil is thought to have put the wheels in motion for move away from Real Madrid after it became clear that his first-team place was set to be threatened by the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale.

Arsenal are also believed to be in talks to sign Chelsea striker Demba Ba on a season-long loan, as well as Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

The north London club have so far only signed Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini on free transfers this summer after being frustrated in their pursuits of Luis Suárez and Gonzalo Higuain.

The Gunners also had a bid of around £10m for Yohan Cabaye turned down by Newcastle United a fortnight ago.

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham in Sunday’s north London derby, Arsene Wenger insisted he was prepared to pay over the odds to add “super quality” to his Gunners squad before Monday’s deadline.

“I am ready to pay what we can afford, even if it is a bit over the market [value] and as long as it is not crazy. I am not against spending,” said Wenger.

“I want to add super quality to our squad. We need one or two super players and we will try to add that.”
