Arsene Wenger has urged out-of-favour Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner to win over the club’s supporters through his performances.

The 25-year-old failed to find the net in 11 Serie A appearances for Juventus after spending the 2012-13 campaign on a season-long loan spell at the Italian champions.

Bendtner, who was a Crystal Palace and Hull City target in August, returned to Arsenal in the summer but failed to secure a move away from the north London side where he is currently out of favour.

However, the 26-year-old is in line to face West Bromwich Albion in League Cup on Wednesday night, and Wenger wants the Denmark international to convince his critics that he can be a success.

“Fans forgive you everything as long as you produce the performances on the football pitch,” Wenger said.

“That’s what people want. I think our fans have a positive attitude towards Bendtner and they will be behind him.

“Only you can create that with your performances.”

He added: “He has responded with a good attitude in training and with good, hard work.

“He had nearly gone somewhere else and in the end he stayed because it didn’t work out and we needed him here.

“Now he can convince everybody. We are open minded, we believe in his qualities.

“I personally believe in his qualities. It’s just down to attitude and fighting spirit.

“When he has that, Nicklas can be an unstoppable striker. He gets his chance. Our job is about that. Take your chance.”
