Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere: My goal ratio is embarrassing
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere wants to score more goals for the Gunners to improve is "embarrassing" strike-rate
Jack Wilshere admits he is desperate to improve his “embarrassing” Arsenal goal ratio.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been a regular fixture in Arsene Wenger’s first-team as the Gunners bounced back from an opening day loss to top the Premier League table after five games.
However, Wilshere is still to find the net this season while his team-mate Aaron Ramsey scores goals for fun and new signing Mesut Özil continues to threaten opposition defences.
The Gunners youngster revealed he always coveted the No10 jersey during Robin van Persie’s spell at The Emirates, and Wilshere now wants to fulfil his ambition of creating and scoring goals regularly.
“I used to joke with Robin that when he left the shirt was mine,” Wilshere told the Daily Mail.
“It was the number I wore in the youth teams and in the reserves. No 10 is the job I want; in the middle of things, moving the ball forward.
“I’d like to score more goals. Right now my goal ratio is embarrassing. But my job is to make things happen, be creative.”
Wilshere insists he is not fazed by the pressure being placed on his shoulders at international level with the Arsenal playmaker being touted as one of England’s next big hopes.
“It doesn’t worry me,” he added. “I saw it happen with Rooney. I remember watching him at 17 or 18, playing in the Euros, and all the excitement that was around him.
“It’s not just me. There are a few players coming through who are hopefully going to become top, top internationals. Lads like Phil Jones.”
