Gunter Netzer insists that Mesut Ozil has not taken a step backwards by joining Arsenal from Real Madrid this summer.

The 24-year-old playmaker signed a five-year deal with the Gunners last week after the north London club paid a club-record £42.5m fee to lure him away from the Spanish capital.

And former Germany international Netzer is adamant that Ozil’s move to Emirates Stadium is not a step down for the midfielder – and believes he will prove that the Spanish club have made a mistake by selling him.

“To speak of a descent, I find absolutely inappropriate,” Netzer told Bild.

“Of course, Real Madrid is one of the biggest clubs in the world. But for Real there seemed reason to separate from Ozil.

“Arsenal is a beautiful new task, it might even be even better for him. Ozil will prove Real Madrid has made a mistake.

“For years the club sold away the best players. Now Ozil is a signal that Arsenal want to get back up.”

Netzer is also backing Arsene Wenger to get the best out of Ozil during his time in north London.

He added: “Ozil is like Mario Gotze or Marco Reus, players who become intoxicated with their technical perfection and especially to test their limits again and again.

“The ultimate goal is to complete an attack quickly and successfully. In Wenger, he has a coach who will keep working with him.”
