Robert Almer Got down well and cut out a dangerous Long cross. Wasn’t overly troubled by the Irish attack. 6/10

Gyogy Garics The right-back nullified Pilkington early on and had a ding-dong battle all evening with the Norwich winger. Ultimately came out on top. 6

Aleksander Dragovic Roughed up Long and was lucky not to concede more free kicks than he did. 5

Sebastian Prodl Dealt very well with Keane and Long at the back. Played intelligently and had a solid evening in defence.7

Christian Fuchs (Captain) Was allowed to carry the ball deep into the Irish half on several occasions and pick passes. Whipped in a tantalising ball from the left but there was no red shirt on hand to connect. Exploited the fact that Walters is not a winger. 6

Julian Baumgartlinger Played the role of deep-lying midfielder. Looked to hit diagonals and move his team forward from deep. 6

Veli Kavlak Forced a save from Forde after a ball broke his way. Proved ineffective in the midfield and was substituted at half-time. 5

Martin Harnik Came on to a loose ball and forced a good save from Forde. Worked well with Baumgartlinger and broke forward from deep to add extra potency to the Austrian attack. 7

David Alaba (Man of the match) The Bayern left-back played a central-attacking role for Austria and didn’t look out of place. Passed well, drifted between the lines fantastically and ultimately scored the winning goal. A class above the rest. 8

Guido Burgstaller Was sent through on goal but couldn’t take down a Garics through ball. Struggled to link up with Alaba and Weimann. 4

Andreas Weimann Quiet night from the Villa striker. Was teed up on the penalty spot and looked like sending the hosts ahead but shot straight at Forde. Has a lot more to offer than what he showed tonight. 5

Substitutes

Christoph Leitgeb Injected some pace into the middle of the Austrian midfield and helped outplay the Irish midfield. 5

David Forde Was worked hard all night and made a plethora of smart saves. Did well to keep the score line at 1-0. 6

Seamus Coleman Showed pace and strength with a powerful run in the 52nd minute. Put his body on the line and made two important blocks. The Everton man had a good all round game. 7

Richard Dunne The veteran defender showed great positional awareness combined with gritty determination. Pressed at the right times but was unlucky to pick up a yellow card. 6

John O’Shea Had an average 49 minutes. Helped Dunne keep Weimann and Burgstaller quiet but left the field shortly after the second-half kicked off with a knock. 5

Marc Wilson Offered Pilkington constant support down the left-hand wing. Shot narrowly over the bar in the second half. Was at fault for Alaba’s goal and should have cleared. 4

Jon Walters Worked incredibly hard holding the ball up and harrying everyone and anyone on his wing. However, he is clearly not a winger and struggled to dribble with the ball and link up with his midfield. 5

Paul Green Industrious and busy performance but lacked a quality-passing game. Helped shield the back four but is not the answer to the Republic’s midfield woes. 5

James McCarthy Made an important interception in the eighth minute and broke forward from midfield to help out in attack. Made a stunning defensive header from an Alaba corner. Tried to manage the midfield on his own at times and struggled. 6

Anthony Pilkington Looked like Ireland’s best attacking threat and hit the side netting in the first half. Was inexplicably substituted for McClean in the second-half. 6

Robbie Keane (Captain) Tried to marshal his men as best possible but was kept anonymous by a dominant Austrian defence. Looked to latch on to knock downs and loose balls but ultimately couldn’t get into the game. 5

Shane Long Struggled to hold the ball up. Looked out of sorts with some poor touches and some equally poor decisions. 3

Substitutes

Ciaran Clark Came on for the injured O’Shea and was brave and decisive in the tackle. Will be happy with his performance. 5
