Cesc Fàbregas is backing Mesut Ozil to hit the ground running in the Premier League following his big-money transfer to Arsenal.

The 24-year-old signed a five-year contract with the Gunners last week after the north London club smashed their transfer record to land the playmaker in a £42.5m deal from Real Madrid.

And former Arsenal captain Fàbregas, who returned to his boyhood club Barcelona in August 2011, is certain that the Germany international will flourish in the English top flight.

“He is going to enjoy the Premier League an awful lot,” Fabregas told Al Primer Toque. “It is a league with much more space and Ozil is a player that, given time and space, he will kill you

“As we have already seen from his time at Real Madrid, his final ball is brilliant and I believe that he will really enjoy himself in England.”

The Spain international’s comments come after Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker revealed that he spoke to Arsene Wenger about Ozil before the Gunners completed the deal last Monday.

“Wenger asked me what I thought of Ozil, and the answer was obvious,” said Mertesacker. “I knew that he had been watching him for a long time, and he wanted to sign him even when he was at Werder Bremen.

“I am glad that we have still managed a relatively big deal before the deadline, which will certainly bring us forward in the Premier League and in the Champions League. I know him from Bremen, so I know he will improve us.”
