Cesc Fàbregas ‘very surprised’ by Mesut Ozil’s Arsenal move
Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fàbregas admits he was "very surprised" by Mesut Ozil's move to Arsenal on deadline day
Cesc Fàbregas has admitted he was surprised to see Real Madrid’s “second-best” player Mesut Ozil join Arsenal on deadline day.
The Germany international penned a five-year deal with the north London side after the Gunners paid a club-record £42.5m fee to lure the midfielder from Los Blancos.
And former Arsenal captain Fàbregas is surprised Madrid allowed one of their top performers to leave the Bernabeu – but is thrilled for Arsene Wenger’s men.
“I was really surprised by Ozil’s departure. He seemed to me the second-best player at Madrid, after Cristiano (Ronaldo),” Fàbregas told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.
“He’ll be great for Arsenal.”
Ozil’s former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his dissatisfaction with the former Werder Bremen midfielder’s sale to Arsenal.
“The sale of Ozil is very bad news for me,” Ronaldo is quoted as saying by Spanish newspaper AS.
“He was the player who best knew my moves in front of goal… I’m angry about Ozil leaving.”
Ozil scored 19 goals in 105 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid after joining Los Blancos in a €15m (£12.6m) deal from Werder Bremen in 2010.
