Steven Gerrard believes Frank Lampard made the right choice to reject LA Galaxy and extend his stay at Chelsea this summer.

The 35-year-old Blues talisman is expected to start alongside the Three Lions captain and Jack Wilshere in midfield for England’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Kiev on Tuesday night.

Lampard rolled back the years with a series of stellar displays last season as the Chelsea midfielder scored 15 goals in 29 Premier League appearances, becoming the club’s record goal scorer in the process.

The former West Ham United star appeared to be heading towards the Stamford Bridge exit door with his contract set to expire this summer and MLS outfit LA Galaxy keen to sign the Englishman.

However, the Blues, belatedly, offered Lampard a one-year contract extension and the veteran committed his future to Chelsea for another season ahead of Jose Mourinho’s return.

And England and Liverpool skipper believes his “good friend” Lampard made the right decision to ignore the lure of moving stateside.

“Of course he made the right choice. He was too good for LA Galaxy in my opinion,” Gerrard is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo.

“Everyone saw how good he was at the end of last season for Chelsea.

“Of course I would have supported his decision if he had decided to go to LA Galaxy, but for me he still had a lot to offer in the Premier League and certainly for England. I would have been sad if he had moved away because he is a great player.”

On Lampard’s imminent 100th England cap, Gerrard added: “No one deserves it more than he does.

“He has been tremendous for club and country.

“He has been a top player and hopefully I will be on the pitch to share that moment with him because I have been with him all the way through.

“He is a good friend of mine and I can’t wait for him to get it.”
