Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho: Samuel Eto’o is hungry to score goals
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says Samuel Eto'o has his appetite back - backing the striker to start scoring goals for the Blues
Jose Mourinho has backed Samuel Eto’o to open his Chelsea account – and insisted he is happy with the strikers at his disposal.
The 32-year-old forward, who joined on a free transfer from Anzhi Makhachkala in August, is still lacking match sharpness after failing to impress in 2-1 loss to Basel at Stamford Bridge.
The Cameroon international was a lethal finisher for the Blues boss during Mourinho’s spell in charge of Inter Milan and the Portuguese coach desperately needs Eto’o to discover his finishing touch again.
The Chelsea manager’s decision to allow Romelu Lukaku to join Everton on a season-long loan has been questioned with Demba Ba and Fernando Torres still misfiring, but Mourinho insists he is happy with the options at his disposal.
“I’m happy with these three strikers for the rest of the season,” said Mourinho.
“The players are good players. The players are good professionals. They are trying their best every day and every match.
“I can’t complain about any one of the three. When they are on the pitch, they always try their best. Their happy moments will arrive.”
On Eto’o, Mourinho added: “At the moment, there isn’t sharpness. It isn’t surprising.
“When you are two or three years in a place that doesn’t motivate you, you are out of the big stage [and] maybe you are there not for the right reasons, you lose the appetite.
“Now he has that back, he has that motivation, he wants to play and he’s happy to be at this level. He’s participating a lot in the collective game.
“He’s a great player and he will score goals.”
