England 4 Moldova 0: Welbeck ‘very disappointed’ by yellow card
England 4 Moldova 0: Danny Welbeck scores twice but picks up a booking which rules him out of Tuesday's Ukraine clash
Danny Welbeck could not hide his disappointment despite scoring twice to help England to victory over Moldova after he picked up a booking which rules him out of Tuesday’s clash in Ukraine.
Welbeck netted the Three Lions’ third and fourth goals after strikes from Steven Gerrard and Rickie Lambert helped Roy Hodgson’s men seal a comfortable win at Wembley.
But the Manchester United striker was cautioned for taking a shot after he was flagged offside, meaning he will miss Tuesday’s clash due to suspension.
“I was obviously very disappointed to get the yellow card,” Welbeck told ITV1.
“In a stadium full of thousands of fans you can’t always hear the referee’s whistle. But even then I thought I was onside and I wanted to put it in the back of the net.
“It was difficult to get my head right because I knew I wasn’t going to be taking part in the next game.
“But the main thing is to do your part for the team and just make sure you give it your best shot. Hopefully in Ukraine we can get the right result.”
England boss Hodgson, meanwhile, was less-than-pleased with the referee’s decision to book Welbeck, with the Three Lions already struggling with a lack of striking options.
“The game was overshadowed by the booking, that’s for sure,” said Hodgson. “We were [already] really very short of front players.
“I really don’t believe that was a yellow card offence. It wasn’t in any way a case of kicking the ball away.
“If you add to that the other yellow card he got in Montenegro, when we thought he should have had a penalty and the referee booked him for diving, he’s been unbelievably unfortunate.
“There are not many teams that can survive the loss of two quality forwards likes [Wayne] Rooney and [Daniel] Sturridge, to lose yet a third one is going to make life difficult for us.
“It does take the gloss off what I thought was a good team performance and a very good win.”
The result hoists England up to the top of Group H ahead of Tuesday’s game in Kiev.
