England’s Steven Gerrard tips Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge to shine
England's Steven Gerrard backs Liverpool team-mate Daniel Sturridge to shine for the Three Lions despite the striker's injury blow
Steven Gerrard has backed Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge to shine for England despite being ruled out of the World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Friday.
The 23-year-old left the England camp to return to the Merseyside outfit to receive further treatment on a thigh strain which he picked up ahead of a 1-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday.
Sturridge, who has scored five goals in four games in all competitions this season, is expected to return to Roy Hodgson’s set-up ahead of their crunch
clash against Ukraine in Kiev on Tuesday
“It’s a shame for Daniel, the stage is set for him to come and shine and do well.
“Fingers crossed he can come back on Saturday evening, the injury has settled down and he’s available for Tuesday. He certainly makes our squad stronger.”
Gerrard captained England to an emphatic 5-0 victory over Moldova earlier in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
And the 33-year-old wants his side to make a similarly emphatic start to Friday night’s clash at Wembley.
“The game was won at half-time and hopefully that’s the case tonight,” the 33-year-old reflected.
“We certainly need to start the game and take it to them. The pressure is on us and we accept that, but we are confident we can get the job done.
“In many ways Tuesday will be a more difficult test, but we’ve still got to beat Moldova, be professional and put in a good performance.
“If we show the same attitude as we did when we went away from home then I’m sure we can win – but it’s a big week and we need as many points as possible.”
