Everton 1 Chelsea 0: Jose Mourinho admits his frustration after watching his side suffer their first league defeat of the season
Jose Mourinho admitted his frustration at Chelsea’s inability to convert their chances after watching his side suffer their first Premier League loss of the season at Everton.
Steven Naismith netted Everton’s eventual winner just before half-time when he headed home following Nikica Jelavic’s nod-back at Goodison Park.
Debutant Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle both spurned chances for Chelsea either side of Naismith’s goal but the Blues were unable to find a way past a battling Everton.
“Of course we could have won the game,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “But I don’t know if I have to say we didn’t deserve to lose or if should say we deserved to lose.
“We didn’t deserve to lose because we were the best team, we played the best football and had 21 shots. In that sense I think it’s fair to say we deserved to win the game.
“But on the other hand we had 21 shots, some of them easy situations to score, and we didn’t score. We made a mistake in the last minute of the first half, when our goalkeeper was in possession and we lost the ball in a strange situation. Maybe because of that I should say we deserve to lose.”
Mourinho pointed the finger at Eto’o and Schurrle following the pair’s inability to convert a number of chances.
“Of course Eto’o needs matches but it was not just him,” he continued.
“I think Schurrle missed three big chances to score. Samuel was the same and other players also had chances.
“But I don’t like to be critical with the players that missed some chances, with the goalkeeper that concedes a bad goal or with a defender that slides.”
