Danny Welbeck scored either side of half-time as England secured an emphatic 4-0 victory over Moldova at Wembley.

Elsewhere in Friday’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers, the Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-1 loss to Sweden and Wales were beaten in Macedonia, while Northern Ireland and Scotland failed to secure a point.

Here is a selection of our favourite Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to the international action.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge (‏@D_Sturridge) would love to be playing at Wembley: “All the best to the boys tonight!!! #england”

Reds defender Glen Johnson (‏@glen_johnson) is also disappointed to be injured: “Gutted missing these two big games for England. Fighting to get back soon for club and country.”

Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey (@aaronramsey) gives his thoughts on the defeat in Macedonia: “Frustrating not to get anything from the game but want to thank the fans who travelled out there. Really appreciate your support.”

Southampton defender Luke Shaw ‏(@Luke_shaw) is thrilled for his team-mate: “Seriously though Lambert deserves this so much, so good seeing him in a England shirt playing as well as he has.”

Former Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given ‏(@No1shaygiven) is disappointed for the Boys in Green: “Big disappointment with the Irish result. Doesn’t look good for qualification now for Brazil #IrlSwe!”

Ex-Everton midfielder Tim Cahill (‏@Tim_Cahill) tips Ross Barkley to shine for the Toffees: “On fire #RossBarkley will become Everton’s main man this year #proudblue”

One-time England international Kevin Davies ‏(@Kevin__Davies) wonders how Hodgson will approach the Ukraine tie: “England top the group going into Tuesday’s huge game. England draw would suit us but how will Roy approach it having said 10 points will do?”

Finally, QPR’s Joseph Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) is thrilled to see another Scouser impress: “Delighted to see Ross Barkley make his debut. Some future ahead of him if he keeps grounded and works hard. #topdrawer”
