Daniel Sturridge netted a fourth-minute winner as Liverpool edged to a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Anfield.

The 24-year-old scored his fifth goal in four appearances in all competitions this season to secure maximum points and move the Reds to the top of the Premier League table.

Here is a selection of our favourite tweets from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to Liverpool’s victory.

Former Liverpool youngster Nathan Eccleston ‏(@NathanEccleston) is pleased to see Rodgers give youth a chance: “Five academy players on the bench and one starting for LFC credit to Brendan Rodgers not many managers would do that at such a big club #salute”

Ex-United defender Viv Anderson (‏@Anderson_Viv) is unhappy with the start at Anfield: “What a bad bad start from United!”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) takes a close look at Sturridge’s goal: “Ashley Young first then Rio then Evra all should do better.”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) is impressed by the Liverpool forward’s goal: “Sturridge strikes for Liverpool. Lesson for young strikers. Watch his movement at the corner. Liverpool miles ahead at present. United have no depth to their game. Midfield is a very flat line of four being played through at will.”

QPR defender Danny Simpson ‏(@dannysimpson) pinpoints the reason why United are struggling: “United are missing Rooney today.”

Ex-Liverpool striker Neil Mellor (‏@NeilMellor33) is enjoying the spectacle: “What a half!!A familiar scoreline this season 1-0!! Sturridge is a man on fire! Let’s hope we continue impressive start and get the three points.”

QPR shareholder Amit Bhatia (@Amit_Bhatia99) enjoys watching Steven Gerrard and Robin van Persie square up: “If Stevie G and RVP decide to settle the matter in the ring id want to promote that fight. #bigbucks #stevieTKO”

Former Liverpool and United striker Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen) is missing the feeling of playing in these type of games: “Only one goal but it was a great match to watch and a great atmosphere… That’s the first game I’ve been to since I retired that I’ve actually craved to play in. I miss playing in the big pressure games.”

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson (‏@glen_johnson) praises his team-mates and gives an injury update: “Great result today. Brilliant performance from everyone. Thanks for all the nice messages. My ankle feels bad at the mo but i have a scan tom morning. So fingers crossed!”

Finally, Brazilian Lucas Leiva ‏(@LucasLeiva87) is thrilled to beat bitter rivals United: “Great atmosphere, great win !!! Anfield was incredible !!! #LFCFamily”
