Jack Wilshere claims that Arsenal’s winning mentality from the end of last season is the key to the Gunners’ recent good form.

The north London side embarked on a 10-game unbeaten league run towards the end of the last campaign as they secured a fourth-place finish and a spot in this season’s Champions League.

And Wilshere believes the Gunners’ mental toughness has been vital, with Arsenal having won their last three top-flight clashes following their surprise opening-day defeat by Aston Villa.

“I think we’ve carried that on from last season,” Wilshere told Arsenal Player after Saturday’s 3-1 win at Sunderland.

“There was a mentality at the end of last season where we had to win games. We had to get that fourth spot.

“We’ve carried that on into this season so far, especially with the away results. We seem to play really well away from home and hopefully we can take that form into the home games now as well.

“We all get on really well here. We’ve got a great set of lads and we’ve been together for four or five years now, most of us. We’re starting to build a real friendship and I think that’s shown on the pitch.”

The midfielder also reserved special praise for Mesut Ozil after the Germany international impressed on his debut at the Stadium of Light, setting up Olivier Giroud for Arsenal’s opener.

“He’s a top quality player,” Wilshere said of Ozil.

“We play football and he’s going to fit in. He’s shown that after one game.

“There’s a lot more to come from him and if he can stay fit and get in that position a lot more, if we can get him on the ball behind their midfield, he’s going to cause the opposition a big problem and he showed that on Saturday.”
