Jose Mourinho insists Juan Mata and Fernando Torres are “professionals of the highest level” and says the duo will get plenty of playing time this season.

Mata started just his second game of Mourinho reign at the club in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Everton as he looks to return to full fitness following an injury-disrupted pre-season campaign.

Torres, who has made two competitive starts under Mourinho so far but just one in the league, was a second-half substitute at Goodison Park as Mourinho opted to put summer signing Samuel Eto’o up front against the Toffees.

But when asked whether he was planning to play the Spanish pair regularly in the build-up to next summer’s World Cup, Mourinho insisted that Mata and Torres remain firmly part of his first-team plans.

“[Selecting Mata and Torres] is a decision for Spain’s coach to make,” said Mourinho.

“Sometimes, players who have not had much playing time are called up – I just focus on doing my job with my club.

“Both of them are professionals of the highest level, great players and they will get their chance to play.”
