Jose Mourinho has admitted his surprise at Mesut Ozil’s transfer to Arsenal – but is thrilled to see a player of his quality in the Premier League.

The Germany international joined the Gunners in a club-record £42.5m deal on transfer deadline day and could make his Premier League debut at Sunderland on Saturday.

And Mourinho, who coached Ozil for three seasons during his time in charge of Real Madrid, did not expect to see the 24-year-old move to Emirates Stadium – but is pleased the playmaker has moved to England.

“Yes, I am surprised but that’s football, that’s the transfer market,” said Mourinho.

“Real Madrid has a lot of great players, so just because they lost Ozil they don’t become a weaker team.

“Mesut left a big club but comes to the biggest league in the world and he comes to a club with big ambitions, so I think if Mesut did it he was happy to do it. And if Madrid sold him it was good for them and their ideas.”

The Chelsea boss continued: “I have good memories with him – three years together and a fantastic relationship. He’s a very good player.

“I wish him good, but not so good because he plays for a direct opponent.

“But I’m so happy a big player like him comes to the Premier League because I keep saying we have to try and keep the good ones and also try to bring in good ones for our league.”
