Kenny Dalglish has backed Liverpool’s plans to offer Luis Suárez a new contract at the club.

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre this week confirmed that the Reds are planning to open talks with the controversial striker about a new deal at the Merseyside club in the coming months.

Suárez made his first Liverpool appearance of the season on Wednesday as the Reds were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United in the League Cup third round.

The 26-year-old looked set to leave Anfield over the summer after making public his desire to move to a club competing in the Champions League, with Arsenal having two bids rejected for the forward.

But former Liverpool boss Dalglish believes that the Reds would be right to reward Suárez with a new contract.

“I think it’s an excellent decision,” Dalglish told talkSPORT. “I think you should lock him in a room until he signs it.

“Luis will decide [if he wants to be at the club], not anybody else. Liverpool don’t want to get rid of him. I think any football club would be much better off if they got Luis Suárez.

“He’s had a couple of problems but if you judge him purely on football, which we should be doing, then he is a fantastic footballer.”
