Daniel Sturridge hailed Liverpool’s “dedication” after the striker fired the Reds to victory over Manchester United to continue their 100 per cent start to the season.

Sturridge stooped to nod home after just four minutes at Anfield as Brendan Rodgers’ men battled hard to secure three points which hoists them up to the top of the Premier League table.

The England international, who turned 24 on Sunday, continued his fine form as he netted the winner for the third straight league game.

And the striker was delighted after helping his side seal a hard-fought win on Merseyside to make their best start for 19 years.

“I don’t think there’s a better way to celebrate my birthday. I feel we’ve been working hard as a team since the start of the season,” Sturridge told Sky Sports.

“In pre-season the manager emphasised that it’s all about the team and not individuals.

“We showed on the field the dedication we put in on the training ground. When we come out here, we work for the fans and we work for the club.”

England boss Roy Hodgson was in the stands on Sunday and Sturridge hopes to have shaken off a thigh problem to be fit for the Three Lions’ forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.

“It’s great to have the manager here,” said Sturridge “It’s important to just be out on the field.

“I had a problem with my thigh before the game and it’s still hindering me, but I had to go out there and try and put a good performance in for the boys. Hopefully I’ll be OK for the squad.”

Meanwhile, man-of-the-match Martin Skrtel was thrilled after helping his side keep a third straight clean sheet in the league.

“You could see on the pitch, everybody was working really hard, showing the attitude, character and desire to win,” said Skrtel.

“The clean sheet was the key. In the pre-season we worked on the defending and we just want to carry on this way.”
