Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, the FA have confirmed
Daniel Sturridge is set to miss England’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Kiev on Tuesday due to a thigh injury, the FA have confirmed.
The 24-year-old striker did not feature in the 4-0 win against Moldova after being granted permission to return to Liverpool for treatment on the injury.
Sturridge picked up the problem in his warm-up ahead of Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday which saw the forward score a fourth-minute winner at Anfield.
A statement from the Football Association read: “The FA can confirm that Daniel Sturridge will not return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup qualifier with Ukraine on Tuesday.
“Club England medical staff have been in constant contact with their counterparts at Liverpool since he returned there on Thursday, his injury has not progressed as had been hoped and it is now clear that Sturridge will not be fit for the match in Kiev on Tuesday evening.
“No additions will be made to Roy Hodgson’s squad of 23 players who travel to Ukraine on Sunday evening.”
Sturridge has scored 13 goals in 17 Premier League appearances, including the winner in each of his side’s Premier League outings this term, after completing a £12m switch to Liverpool from Chelsea in the January transfer window.
