Phil Thompson admits it will be difficult for Liverpool to forgive Luis Suárez for his biting controversy ahead of the striker’s return to action.

The Uruguay international received a hefty 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in a 2-2 draw with the Blues at Anfield in April.

Suárez, who scored 23 Premier League goals, is expected to make his return from the ban against Manchester United in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

While Liverpool legend Thompson admits Suárez’s imminent return is like a new signing, the former Reds captain is still finding it to difficult to reconcile with his recent controversy.

“I don’t think we’ll ever forgive what he actually got up to with Ivanovic at the back of last season. It wasn’t good, not for my football club,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

“But he’s still here, which is fantastic. He will be like a new signing coming in for this season.

“I’m quite sure he will be in that starting line-up at Old Trafford and I think it adds that little extra.

“Does any Manchester United v Liverpool game need any spice? Not really, but this one is extra special because of Luis Suárez.”
