Liverpool owners backing Brendan Rodgers, says Mark Lawrenson
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes the club's owners have demonstrated their faith in Brendan Rodgers this summer
Mark Lawrenson has praised Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group for backing Brendan Rodgers in the summer transfer window.
The Reds signed eight players during the off-season as Rodgers attempted to build a squad capable of launching an assault on the Premier League’s top four this term.
In particular, on deadline day, the Liverpool boss recruited Paris Saint-Germain’s highly-rated Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori in deals worth a combined £25m.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes it is clear Rodgers has the full backing of the club’s American owners after John Henry and company dug deep this summer.
“It the final days of the transfer window have proven one thing at Liverpool, it’s that the owners are backing Brendan Rodgers,” Lawrenson wrote in his Liverpool Daily Post column.
“The fact they have won their first three Premier League games has helped. Fenway Sports Group aren’t always at the game, and in their absence they will look for the results. They are what counts.
“So to hand over £25m for two up-and-coming centre-backs is a real statement of intent.
“Both Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori fit the FSG template. They are young, hungry and, if successful, will have considerable sell-on value.
“At £18m, I cannot believe Sakho isn’t going to be a regular, and the Americans are likely to ask questions if he isn’t playing regularly.”
