Liverpool have confirmed Italy international Fabio Borini has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old agreed a deal with the Black Cats on Monday and the Azzurri forward will wear the number 31 shirt for the Stadium of Light outfit.

Borini, who was a member of Italy’s side which reached this summer’s European Under-21 championship final, endured a difficult first campaign as a Liverpool player following a £10.5m move from Roma last summer.

The former Bologna man was left sidelined for almost three months with a broken foot which he picked up an international duty in October before dislocating his shoulder in a 5-0 win against Swansea City in February.

However, Borini, who had reiterated his desire to remain in the Premier League amid interest from Seria A this summer, will work under compatriot Paolo Di Canio at the Black Cats.

A Liverpool statement read: “Liverpool Football Club has confirmed that Italian forward Fabio Borini has joined Barclays Premier League side Sunderland on loan for the duration of the 2013-14 campaign.

“The 22-year-old joins the Black Cats, who are managed by Paolo Di Canio and currently sit 19th in the league standings, on a season-long deal.

“Borini was Brendan Rodgers’ first signing as Liverpool boss after completing a transfer from Serie A outfit Roma in July 2012.

“The No.29 has since made 20 appearances for the Reds, notching two goals in the process.”
