Liverpool were never going to sell Luis Suárez this summer, according Arsenal majority shareholder Stan Kroenke.

The 26-year-old striker expressed his desire to leave the Reds at the end of the 2012/13 season after Liverpool failed to secure a top-four finish and a return to Champions League football.

The Merseyside outfit rejected two offers from the Gunners in the off-season, including a £40,000,001 bid, whilst Real Madrid were also interested in the South American.

However, Brendan Rodgers remained firm in his stance the Uruguayan was not for sale and the former Ajax forward returned to the Reds and committed his immediate future to the 18-time English champions.

“Look, Arsene Wenger had a view, our team had a view, they had a view and their view was ‘he wasn’t going anywhere’,” Kroenke told the Telegraph.

“I never saw them waver from it. I guess at some level there is a number that gets anybody out of anywhere but there was nothing within the realm of what we knew about that could have got him out of there.”

Arsenal boss Wenger spent a club-record £42.5m to lure Mesut Ozil to Emirates Stadium on deadline day.
